Family Files Lawsuit After 84-Year-Old Woman Dies Outside Ohio Nursing Facility

The family of 84-year-old Alvera Meuti has filed a lawsuit against the Avenue at Warrensville Care and Rehabilitation Center in Ohio after she was found dead outside the facility in December 2024.

According to the complaint, Meuti went missing on the evening of December 23 and was later discovered unresponsive on an outdoor patio. Authorities determined she died from hypothermia.

The lawsuit alleges wrongful death, recklessness, and negligence. The facility’s owners and nurse Amber Henderson are named as defendants. The case is now moving through the court system as both civil and criminal proceedings continue.

Allegations Detailed in the Lawsuit

Court filings allege that Meuti’s room was located next to an exit door that was left unlocked on the night she disappeared. The complaint claims that no alarm sounded when she exited the building.

According to the lawsuit, Meuti was checked at approximately 9:30 p.m., but when she was later unaccounted for, no immediate report was made and no urgent search was initiated.

She was found the following morning on a patio outside the facility. The family alleges that proper supervision and safety measures were not followed.

The lawsuit names nurse Amber Henderson as a defendant. Henderson has been indicted on charges that include involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident. Her attorney has stated publicly that he will vigorously defend her and maintains she did nothing wrong.

All allegations remain subject to court review, and no final determinations have been made.

Broader Concerns for Families of Nursing Home Residents

This case has raised concerns about resident safety during winter conditions and the systems in place to prevent vulnerable adults from wandering unsupervised.

Families often rely on nursing homes to provide continuous monitoring and protection. When incidents occur, they may seek clarity about:

  • Staffing levels
  • Security procedures
  • Communication protocols
  • Compliance with state and federal regulations

While criminal charges focus on potential violations of law, civil lawsuits address whether families may be entitled to compensation due to alleged negligence.

As the case proceeds, both the family and defendants will present their positions in court.
